Jon Foreman of Switchfoot makes a persuasive argument for staying out of a box and telling an authentic story the way you see it. Don’t write ‘Christian’ stories or songs just to sound spiritual and make your fellow church members happy. Write stories and songs that inspire, that encourage, that harness some piece of reality around us and speak to the reader. Write something true.
Lead singer Jon Foreman was asked if Switchfoot is a “Christian” band. His response is worth pondering.
“To be honest, this question grieves me because I feel that it represents a much bigger issue than simply a couple SF tunes. In true Socratic form, let me ask you a few questions: Does Lewis or Tolkien mention Christ in any of their fictional series? Are Bach’s sonata’s Christian?
